Contabo — What the Low Price Actually Buys
- Cloud VPS 4: 4 vCPU and 8 GB RAM for €5.50/month (€4.40 for the first 24 months)
- Six product lines — Core, Performance, Max Performance, Storage, dedicated servers, and a dedicated-GPU VPS
- 11 locations across 9 regions, including India, Singapore, Japan, and Australia
Our Verdict
Contabo is the cheapest way to get a lot of RAM, cores, or disk space that we compared: 4 vCPU and 8 GB of RAM for €5.50 a month, or €4.40 for the first 24 months. Its range is also unusually wide, from a €4.40 Core VPS up to a €799.20 dedicated-GPU VPS.
The trade-offs are real: unmanaged servers, shared hardware on the VPS lines, regional surcharges, long prepaid terms, and traffic that is unlimited only up to a fair-usage policy. We have not tested Contabo hands-on, so this verdict rests on Contabo's own pages and legal terms, not on our own benchmarks.

How We Researched This Review
We read Contabo’s own product pages, its configurator, its terms and conditions, its right-of-withdrawal page, and its help desk on 28 September 2026. Every price, spec, and term in this review comes from those pages.
We have not bought a Contabo server for this review, so we have no first-hand speed, uptime, or support-response data. Where a claim is Contabo’s own — such as its two-hour average support response — we attribute it to Contabo instead of stating it as our finding.
We also read two Contabo blog announcements: its 29 July 2026 post restructuring the VPS lineup into Core, Performance, and Max Performance, and its 21 September 2026 GPU VPS launch post. The July restructure explains a naming trap: the old “Cloud VPS 10/20/40/60” plans (with NVMe storage) were replaced by “Cloud VPS Core 4/6/8/12/16/18” (SSD), and some older Contabo pages and third-party guides still use the earlier names. We use the current names from Contabo’s pricing pages and configurator — existing customers keep their old plans, so confirm the exact plan and storage type at checkout.

Core VPS — the budget line
Core is Contabo’s low-cost SSD line, aimed by Contabo at “lighter, everyday workloads” such as hobby projects, CMS hosting, dev and staging servers, and small backends. Contabo says it runs on “proven infrastructure across multiple CPU generations” with KVM virtualization.
| Plan | vCPU / RAM | Storage | Port | Snapshots | List price | First 24 months |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cloud VPS 4 | 4 / 8 GB | 100 GB SSD | 200 Mbit/s | 1 | €5.50 | €4.40 |
| Cloud VPS 6 | 6 / 12 GB | 200 GB SSD | 300 Mbit/s | 2 | €7.50 | €6.00 |
| Cloud VPS 8 | 8 / 24 GB | 300 GB SSD | 600 Mbit/s | 3 | €14.00 | €11.20 |
| Cloud VPS 12 | 12 / 48 GB | 400 GB SSD | 800 Mbit/s | 3 | €25.00 | €20.00 |

| Cloud VPS 18 | 18 / 96 GB | 600 GB SSD | 1 Gbit/s | 3 | €49.00 | €39.20 |
The 8 GB Cloud VPS 4 is the plan we use as the budget pick in our Best VPS for AI comparison. Its 200 Mbit/s port and SSD storage are the price of the low cost.
Performance VPS (Cloud VPS Plus) — AMD EPYC and NVMe
Performance VPS uses AMD EPYC CPUs and Gen 4 PCIe NVMe storage, with ports of 500 Mbit/s to 1 Gbit/s and five snapshots. Contabo positions it for databases, API services, and AI-ready CPU workloads, and says storage can be extended up to 1.8 TB.
| Plan | vCPU / RAM | Storage | Port | Snapshots | List price | First 24 months |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cloud VPS Plus 4 | 4 / 8 GB | 150 GB NVMe | 500 Mbit/s | 5 | €13.50 | €10.80 |
| Cloud VPS Plus 6 | 6 / 12 GB | 300 GB NVMe | 500 Mbit/s | 5 | €19.00 | €15.20 |
| Cloud VPS Plus 8 | 8 / 24 GB | 450 GB NVMe | 1 Gbit/s | 5 | €35.00 | €28.00 |
| Cloud VPS Plus 12 | 12 / 48 GB | 600 GB NVMe | 1 Gbit/s | 5 | €59.00 | €47.20 |
| Cloud VPS Plus 16 | 16 / 64 GB | 750 GB NVMe | 1 Gbit/s | 5 | €79.00 | €63.20 |
| Cloud VPS Plus 18 | 18 / 96 GB | 900 GB NVMe | 1 Gbit/s | 5 | €99.00 | €79.20 |
Contabo states plainly that Performance VPS is “shared VPS hosting at the hypervisor level” with guaranteed dedicated resources per plan. Our step-by-step Ollama on Contabo guide builds on the Plus 4.
Max Performance (Cloud VDS) — dedicated CPU and RAM
Cloud VDS is Contabo’s virtual dedicated server line, sold with “dedicated CPU and RAM” on AMD EPYC 7282 processors at 2.8 GHz. Contabo points to it as the option for single-tenant CPU allocation.
| Plan | Virtual cores | RAM | Storage | List price | First 24 months |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cloud VDS S | 6 (AMD EPYC 7282, 2.8 GHz) | 24 GB | 180 GB NVMe | €49.00 | €39.20 |
| Cloud VDS M | 8 | 32 GB | 240 GB NVMe | €62.00 | €49.60 |
| Cloud VDS L | 12 | 48 GB | 360 GB NVMe | €87.00 | €69.60 |
| Cloud VDS XL | 16 | 64 GB | 480 GB NVMe | €118.00 | €94.40 |
| Cloud VDS XXL | 24 | 96 GB | 720 GB NVMe | €174.00 | €139.20 |
Storage VPS — capacity first
Storage VPS trades CPU and RAM for disk space: 300 GB of SSD on the €4.40 entry plan, up to 1.4 TB on the top plan.
| Plan | vCPU / RAM | Storage | Port | List price | First 24 months |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Storage VPS 10 | 2 / 4 GB | 300 GB SSD | 200 Mbit/s | €5.50 | €4.40 |
| Storage VPS 20 | 3 / 8 GB | 400 GB SSD | 300 Mbit/s | €7.50 | €6.00 |
| Storage VPS 30 | 6 / 18 GB | 1 TB SSD | 600 Mbit/s | €14.00 | €11.20 |
| Storage VPS 40 | 8 / 30 GB | 1.2 TB SSD | 800 Mbit/s | €25.00 | €20.00 |
| Storage VPS 50 | 14 / 50 GB | 1.4 TB SSD | 1 Gbit/s | €37.00 | €29.60 |
Dedicated servers and GPU VPS
Contabo’s bare-metal servers come with “no setup fees, unlimited traffic and IPMI (iLO) included”. Its GPU VPS, launched on 21 September 2026, is a dedicated NVIDIA RTX PRO 6000 with 96 GB of GDDR7 memory and full PCI passthrough, alongside 18 vCPUs, 96 GB of RAM, and 900 GB of NVMe. Contabo says it runs in Europe or US Central, is billed monthly, and quotes €999 excluding VAT with 15% off on 12-month terms and 20% off on 24-month terms.
| Server | CPU | RAM | Storage | List price | First 12 months |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| AMD Ryzen 12 Cores | AMD Ryzen 9 7900, 12 × 3.70 GHz | 64 GB (up to 128 GB) | 1 TB NVMe | €149.00 | €109.65 |
| AMD Genoa 24 Cores | AMD EPYC 9224, 24 × 2.50 GHz (3.70 max) | 128 GB REG ECC (up to 768 GB) | 2 × 1 TB SSD | €199.00 | €179.10 |
Dedicated servers: source contabo.com/en/dedicated-servers, read 28 September 2026. GPU VPS: €999.00 per month list, €799.20 per month for the first 24 months (contabo.com/en/gpu-vps).
Pricing — The Full Picture (Read This Carefully)
The headline prices are promotional. Contabo shows a list price and a lower rate for the first 24 months (12 for dedicated servers), and the best rate is prepaid: on the Cloud VPS Core 6 configurator, choosing 24 months meant €144.00 due upfront.
| Term | Cloud VPS Core 6 price | Setup fee |
|---|---|---|
| 1 month | €7.50 / month | None shown |
| 12 months | €6.38 / month (saves 15%) | None shown |
| 24 months | €6.00 / month (saves 20%) — €144.00 prepaid | None shown |
Source: Contabo's Cloud VPS Core 6 configurator, read 28 September 2026. Contabo says its displayed price is the effective monthly rate for a 24-month subscription including applicable taxes.
In Contabo’s US store view, the same 4 vCPU / 8 GB Cloud VPS 4 shows $6.60 list and $5.28 for the first 24 months including VAT, so you can order in dollars as well as euros.
After the promo period the list price applies. The checkout figures in our OpenClaw hosting guide show renewal at the list price — for example €4.40 rising to €5.50 a month on the 4 vCPU / 8 GB plan.
Where your server lives changes the price
The EU location was free on the Core 6 configurator, but every other region added a monthly surcharge. That matters for the locations Contabo advertises as a strength.
| Location | Monthly surcharge (Cloud VPS Core 6) |
|---|---|
| European Union | Free |
| United Kingdom | + €1.60 |
| United States — Central | + €1.60 |
| United States — West | + €2.00 |
| United States — East | + €2.40 |
| Australia (Sydney) | + €3.30 |
| Asia — India | + €3.70 |
| Asia — Singapore | + €3.95 (showed "out of stock" when we checked) |
| Asia — Japan | + €4.00 |
Source: Cloud VPS Core 6 configurator, 24-month term, read 28 September 2026. Surcharges may differ by plan. Singapore showed "out of stock" when we checked.
A Core 6 in the India location therefore works out to €9.70 a month on the 24-month term (€6.00 plus the €3.70 surcharge) — our arithmetic, not a Contabo figure.
Add-ons and extras

Contract terms
Contabo’s terms give a default initial term of one, three, six, or twelve months, and the contract extends automatically by the same period unless either side gives four weeks’ notice. Termination is done through the customer account. Consumers also have a 14-day statutory right of withdrawal, with a reasonable charge for any service already provided.
Performance — What We Can and Cannot Say
We have no first-hand performance data for Contabo and we are not citing third-party benchmarks as fact. What Contabo itself claims is limited to hardware descriptions: Core on “proven infrastructure across multiple CPU generations”, Performance on AMD EPYC with NVMe, and VDS on dedicated AMD EPYC 7282 cores.
Two facts are worth knowing when you size a server. Contabo’s own line comparison lists Core and Performance as shared vCPUs (Performance on newer hardware) and Max Performance as dedicated CPU and RAM, and it says Performance VPS is shared at the hypervisor level. It also reserves the right to throttle servers with “exceptionally high or disruptive usage patterns” even on unlimited-traffic plans.
Support and Reliability
Contabo’s help desk offers “Chat With Us” for quick or urgent questions and tickets for complex requests. Contabo says its support handles more than 21,000 requests a week with a two-hour average response time, and that first-level staff resolve over 83% of cases — all Contabo’s own figures, which we have not tested.
The terms state that Contabo’s services are available “at an annual average rate of 99.9%”, excluding causes outside its control. Over a year that allows roughly 8.8 hours of downtime — our arithmetic — and the figure is an average, not a per-month guarantee. Contabo also runs a public status page at contabo-status.com.
Support is scoped to the server: Contabo covers the network, hardware, and initial setup of 1-click add-ons, and says maintenance of the software you install is your responsibility.
Locations
Contabo lists “9 Regions, 11 Locations” across the EU, UK, US, Singapore, Japan, India, and Australia. That is fewer than Vultr’s 33 regions but wider than Hetzner’s four countries, and unusually, it includes India — see the surcharge table above before you assume the price stays the same.
Strengths and Trade-Offs
What Contabo Gets Right
- Cheapest 8 GB plan among the five providers in our AI VPS comparison
- Broad range: Core, Performance, VDS, Storage, dedicated, and GPU
- India, Singapore, Japan, and Australia locations
- No setup fee shown on the configurator pages we read
- Chat and ticket support, plus a 14-day right of withdrawal for consumers
Contabo Trade-Offs to Weigh
- Best prices require a 24-month prepay and auto-extend unless you cancel with four weeks' notice
- Regional surcharges of €1.60 to €4.00 a month on the Core 6 configurator
- VPS lines are shared hosts; dedicated CPU means moving up to VDS
- Core plans use SSD and 200–600 Mbit/s ports at the low end
- Unmanaged: you maintain the OS and the software you install
- Plan names changed in July 2026, and some older Contabo pages still show the earlier names and specs
Who Should Choose Contabo
- Developers and self-hosters who want the most RAM and cores per euro for dev servers, Docker stacks, Ollama, or n8n.
- Storage-heavy projects such as backups, media archives, or file servers, where Storage VPS costs little per terabyte.
- Anyone who wants a single provider that scales from a €4.40 VPS to dedicated hardware or a dedicated GPU.
- Users in India, Singapore, Japan, or Australia who want a nearby location and accept the surcharge.
Who Should NOT Choose Contabo
- Beginners who have never used SSH — the servers are unmanaged.
- Teams that need a strong, published uptime guarantee for customer-facing production — the terms give a 99.9% annual average, and we have no hands-on reliability data.
- Anyone who cannot commit to a long prepaid term or who wants a fully predictable price across regions.
- Buyers who need dedicated CPU on a tight budget — that means VDS pricing, from €39.20 a month on the 24-month promo.
Bottom Line
Contabo wins on price per unit of RAM, cores, and disk, and it now sells everything from a €4.40 VPS to a dedicated GPU. The catch is not hidden but it is easy to miss: the best rates are prepaid for 24 months, regions cost extra, and the servers are yours to manage.
If you are comfortable with a terminal and want cheap capacity for development, AI experiments, or storage, it is well worth a look. If you need guaranteed dedicated CPU, hands-on support, or predictable pricing across regions, compare it against the alternatives in our budget VPS guide first.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Contabo good for beginners?
Only if you are comfortable with a terminal. Contabo’s VPS plans are unmanaged: you get root access and manage the operating system yourself. Contabo says its support covers the VPS itself — network, hardware, and the initial setup of 1-click add-ons — while maintaining the software you install is your responsibility.
Does Contabo offer a money-back guarantee?
Contabo’s legal pages give consumers a 14-day statutory right of withdrawal, with a reasonable charge for any service already provided. We did not find a separate marketing money-back guarantee on the pages we read, and we have not tested the refund process.
Is Contabo’s traffic really unlimited?
Contabo advertises unlimited outgoing traffic, subject to a fair usage policy, and reserves the right to throttle servers with exceptionally high or disruptive usage. Your real ceiling is the port speed — from 200 Mbit/s on the entry Core plans up to 1 Gbit/s on larger plans.
What is the difference between Core, Performance, and Max Performance VPS?
Core is the low-cost SSD line on proven hardware with shared vCPUs. Performance (Cloud VPS Plus) uses AMD EPYC CPUs and NVMe storage on shared hosts with guaranteed resources. Max Performance (Cloud VDS) is Contabo’s dedicated-CPU-and-RAM line on AMD EPYC 7282 processors.
Does Contabo charge extra for different locations?
Yes. On the Cloud VPS Core 6 configurator, the EU location was free while other regions added monthly surcharges — for example €1.60 for the UK, €3.70 for India, and €4.00 for Japan. Check the surcharge for your plan and region before you order.
Can I run Ollama or other AI workloads on Contabo?
Yes, on CPU. Contabo’s Performance VPS is positioned for AI-ready workloads, and it also lists a dedicated-GPU VPS with an NVIDIA RTX PRO 6000. See our step-by-step Ollama on Contabo guide and our Best VPS for AI comparison for how it stacks up against Hetzner, Vultr, DigitalOcean, and Hostinger.
